Opening Keynote: Take Your Staff Coaching Frustrations from "Why Me" to "Yes Me!"

11/02/2023 9:15 AM
Did you spend a lot of time this summer coaching your seasonal staff on what you felt like are essential “life and emotional intelligence skills?” Do you feel like there’s been a shift in the training that your staff need? That the learning/teaching/coaching is much more then “how to work with kids and be a camp counselor” but equally “how to be an employee and co-worker?” If you are like many camp professionals, this can be exhausting and frustrating. But what if we saw this as an opportunity for camp to be a part of launching fantastic young adults into the workplace, that can bring the things they’ve learned at camp to their future workplaces and roles as leaders? Don’t we all want to be the best boss/supervisors that your staff will work for, that in turn will be fantastic bosses/supervisors someday? This session will provide an opportunity to shift our mindset from frustration to “We get to do this!” We will look at how we can be intentional in our own camp to build these essential skills for the future in our staff and impact the world far beyond our camp properties. You will leave with tangible takeaways to implement at your camp for coaching staff for growth in communication, giving & receiving feedback, authentic & vulnerable leadership, problem solving, conflict management, agency, and servant leadership.

Year 1: Survive Year 2: Thrive Year 3: Grow & Give Have you ever heard from your returning staff that they want to come back for year 2, 3, 4 but they’re wondering how it will be different than their first summer? They’re your incredible first- and second-year counselors who are ready for more but still want to be counselors and don’t want/or aren’t ready to join your leadership team and step out of working with kids directly? For these reasons and more we created a Leadership Council at our camp. Find out how this was one of the best things we’ve ever done, the impact it had on our staff and how you can create one at your camp.

Lunch & Pie Auction

11/02/2023 12:15 PM
Join the Wisconsin tradition of buying and donating pies for the Fall Conference lunch. For many years Duane Hanson volunteered for Bethel Horizons in Madison as the location for the WI Fall Conference. A highlight for everyone were the wonderful pies that were served with lunch. Duane was involved in ACA for many years, was on the leadership team for Wisconsin, and helped make us a financially stable section.  After Duane passed away, we began the pie auction to celebrate Duane's giving spirit and as a remembrance of those delicious homemade pies. All monies from the pie auction go towards sending a child to camp in Wisconsin. We ask that you bring a pie (or favorite dessert) for the auction and some money to purchase your dessert or a dessert to take home. Please be generous in purchasing desserts as the monies will support sending a child in need to camp. Desserts can be purchased by the piece or by entire dessert (your family/coworkers will thank you). Thanks for supporting our quirky, fun and delicious fund raiser.

Staff recruitment has been interesting these past few years! Are you struggling to find enough folks to work at camp for the summer? Has it been challenging to keep the staff you've hired? After needing to increase staff from 40 to 75 in three short years to operate our growing programs, it became a challenge to figure out not only how to find and hire great people, but to keep them coming back for two or three more summers! Come learn what we did to increase the number of staff we hired and turn our retention rate from below 20% to over 50%. We'll discuss what you can do now to make recruitment and retention easier for you!
